Business Development Intern, Cape Town, South Africa (volunteer -stipend may be negotiable)
Based in Cape Town, heart social investments (HSI) is introducing a suite of social investment options that will provide Investors with multiple ways of funding sustainable solutions to Africa’s social and environmental problems. HSI’s portfolio will allow investors to allocate capital to impactful investments in the form of debt, equity, and grants.
By partnering with HSI, Investors will have the unique ability to invest into sustainable strategies for tackling the pressing issues our society currently faces. These Social Enterprises are innovative, market driven solutions to social, environmental, and economic problems in the community. These businesses, given their social orientation and start-up status, cannot typically access funds through traditional channels in order to finance their operations. With this challenge in mind, HSI and its investors are able to provide vital funding to such social enterprises by offering affordable financing in the form of business development loans.
In conjunction with the loan funding, the social enterprises in HSI’s investment portfolio will be further supported by business development consulting services from heart’s Incubator (a section 21 organisation). The Incubator offers social entrepreneurs business development support in the form of process methodology, consulting services, mentorship, infrastructure, training, operational support and governance through various phases of development. This combination of affordable financing and powerful management consulting services will give social entrepreneurs the resources they need to be successful.
Opportunity:
HSI is currently developing its business platform and is still in a startup stage with amazing potential for growth. We need intelligent, strategic, and resourceful interns to help us build our business. We need interns who can step in and help support the team with the following areas:

Blog Action Day 2009: Climate Change, a letter to Obama
October 15, 2009
Targeting: The President of the United States
Sponsored by: Alliance for Climate Protection
More than any other country, action taken by the United States to limit greenhouse gases and build a clean energy economy is needed to achieve a sustainable solution to our global climate crisis.
This December world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to negotiate a global response to climate change. As a world leader in greenhouse gas pollution as well as clean energy technology, the United States needs to take bold action by implementing comprehensive clean energy policies to curb emissions.
Nobel Peace Prize Winner and President Barack Obama has said that climate change is an urgent threat, and now is the time for him to lead the United States in confronting the climate crisis.
This is a chance for people around the world and in the United States to join together in telling President Obama that we want him to lead the United States in taking bold and significant action to reduce greenhouse gasses.
Time is running out, and our planet can’t afford to wait.
Here is a sample letter you can send to your state representative or the presidential office itself:
It’s Time to Act on Climate Change
Dear President Obama,
This December world leaders will gather in Copenhagen to negotiate a global response to climate change. As a world leader in greenhouse gas pollution as well as clean energy technology, the United States needs to take bold action by implementing comprehensive clean energy policies to curb emissions.
We join others around the world in calling on you to lead the United States in taking bold and significant action to reduce greenhouse gasses.
Do something because yes, if climate change has not already affected your life…know that it will in the very near future.

Earth Journalism Awards (global)

Earth Journalism Awards
Region
Global
Deadline Date
September 7, 2009
The Earth Journalism Awards, organised by the media assistance organisation Internews, honour those in the media – professional journalists and citizen journalists/bloggers – who use their communication skills and influence to promote awareness of and provide new insight on climate change issues – whether it be in their region or in relation to certain key themes – through the production of news and current affairs reports. Winners will have the opportunity to cover the United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP15) in Copenhagen, Denmark, December 7-18 2009, where they will cover these negotiations and be honoured at an awards ceremony.
Fourteen award categories are open in this competition. Seven regional awards will be presented, along with seven thematic awards. In addition, the winning stories will be posted on the internet so that the public may vote on the best story, which will then be deemed the winner of a special Global Public Award.
- Seven regional awards on current affairs and news reporting on climate change: Eurasia, South Asia, East Asia, Sub-Saharan Africa, Middle East and North Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, North America, and Europe and Australia.
- Six thematic awards: the Negotiations Award, the Human Voices Award, the Energy Award, the Forests Award, the Climate Change and Nature Award, and the Climate Change Adaptation Award. A 7th thematic award, the MTV Positive Change Award, will be open for entry by youth between ages 18 and 28 beginning June 22 2009.
- The Global Public Award will be chosen by the public, which will be invited to vote online for the best story drawn from the winning regional and thematic awards through a social networking campaign on platforms such as Facebook and Twitter.
EJN is a project of Internews, established to empower and enable journalists in the Global South to improve their environmental coverage. This award has been established to improve coverage of COP15.

Climate change is not a problem that can be solved by a single entity – be it government, business, civil society, or individuals. We believe that long term solutions will come from the combined efforts of all of the above. While government will play an important role, we need not wait for government direction to take steps to understand, reduce, and mitigate our share of GHG emissions. If you would like to accept this challenge with us, then use the tools below to select a category, submit your idea in a 1000 characters or less, and submit a complete grant application. Download full details and an application form at www.gmcr.com/ccc-rfp.
