Deadline: January 20, 2010. US$25,000 prize

Are you a storyteller? An influencer? A connector? An idea person?

We Media and Ashoka’s Changemakers are looking for the most innovative ideas inspiring a better world through media. Be part of the 2010 We Media PitchIt! Challenge.

ENTER your solutions from now until January 20, 2010. The top finalists will pitch their ideas at We Media Miami, March 9-11, 2010. The best entry in each category–non-profit and business–will receive a $25,000 prize to help launch their new venture.
What happens when people have the power to tell their story?

We Media and Ashoka’s Changemakers have teamed up once again to find and launch the best new ideas for inspiring a better world through media. In the We Media PitchIt! Challenge, we’re looking for groundbreaking solutions from all fields that incite action, encourage collaboration, and lead society to knowledge.

Thanks to a generous grant from the Ethics and Excellence in Journalism Foundation, we will provide $50,000 in seed funding to help launch the best solutions. One business and one non-profit venture will each receive $25,000 in seed capital.

Entrants will have the freedom to collaborate with potential partners and investors, while the global online community will discuss, debate and improve upon the most creative solutions.

All finalists will participate in the sixth annual We Media Event in Miami, March 9-11, 2010, and present their ideas to a panel of judges as well as potential funders and partners.

The competition will be open to individuals from all countries. We consider the following criteria:

* Media Focus: Ideas should reflect the theme of the competition. We are searching for innovative ideas that use media to create social change.
* Idea Stage: We’re looking for early-stage ventures or brand new ideas that have not yet been launched or built. These may be entirely new ventures, new companies or new projects from existing organizations.
* Business or Non-Profit: There will be two categories: business and non-profit. In the business category, the funding must be used to support the start-up of a new business that will have a sustainable revenue model. In the non-profit category, the funding should be used to support the launch of a non-profit venture or the development of a new project for an existing non-profit organization.
* Completed Form: Entries must be fully completed and submitted before the deadline of January 20, 2010.
* Language: Entries should be submitted in English.

B. Assessment Criteria

There will be several stages to this process:

1) The community’s comments will be included in the evaluation process.

2) The finalists will be selected by a combination of We Media and expert judges. Finalists will be announced on February 3, 2010.

3) Each finalist will attend We Media Miami March 9-11, 2010 and make a formal presentation to attendees and a panel of expert judges. There will be separate expert panels for business and non-profit ideas.

4) We Media PitchIt! Challenge finalists will each receive the following travel assistance for attending We Media Miami 2010:

* Up to $300 toward a coach airline ticket
* 2 nights lodging in Miami
* Registration for the entire We Media Event
* A display location in the gallery

5) Winners each receive $25,000 in seed funding: The judges will select one business and one non-profit entry. Each winner will receive $25,000 in seed funding.

Judges will consider the following criteria:

* Innovation: Is the idea innovative? This is the knock-out test. The idea should represent a disruptive innovation that changes the way media works. The innovation should demonstrate a substantial difference from other initiatives in the field and have the potential for large-scale expansion. We look for innovative business practices, entrepreneurial quality and a plausible sustainable model.
* Story Telling: Does this idea tell a story in a new or innovative way – or enable others to tell their stories? Does it create and apply a unique storytelling experience through journalism, discovery, narrative, exposition, or new methods and metaphors? We are looking for ideas that change the way we experience or understand storytelling. In this context, we define storytelling broadly.
* Social Impact: Does the idea affect social conditions, stimulate citizenship, raise awareness, influence public policy, or marshal support for an idea of broad social significance? Does this idea present a solution for increasing access, knowledge or connection for all? The idea may address a specific underserved community or the society at large, but ultimately it is important that the innovation has a potential for application or replication globally. It is also important that the idea does not have a negative environmental impact.
* Sustainability: Will the innovator be able to launch and sustain this idea? For an innovation to be truly effective, it should have a plan for securing financial backing and community support. We are looking for social entrepreneurs with ideas that are financially sustainable and scalable. We will also consider the experience and capacity of the innovator (or team), who will be expected to launch the idea.
* Design: Does the idea creatively engage multiple levels of intelligence and understanding of complex information with clarity, style, and meaning?
* Pattern Change: Does the idea pioneer original approaches and paradigms?
* Purpose: Does the idea express a purposeful vision through values reflecting ethics, credibility, responsibility and authenticity?
* Community: Does the idea seek to organize a community, virtual or geographic, in a new way?

Social Impact Business Plan Competition Invites Entries From Nonprofit Organizations

The Social Impact Business Plan Competition identifies social sector scaling initiatives with demonstrated impact and readiness to grow, and supports them with up to $100,000 in financial and consulting support. The competition is a program of the Social Impact Exchange, a recently launched cross-sector initiative designed to support the growth of high-impact social programs.

United States-based nonprofit organizations with a focus in education, youth development, health, poverty alleviation, or community economic development are eligible to enter.

The competition has two tracks. The early-stage growth track is for organizations that have a strategy for scaling their social impact but are in the early stage of growth. The mezzanine-stage growth track is for organizations that have (a) a significant level of successful product/service adoption and demand from the target population, (b) demonstrated positive outcomes, and (c) defined strategies for scaling their social impact.

Competition entrants have access to a Web site of resources, take part in group training and one-on-one consulting, and receive customized written feedback on their plans. Judging is conducted by qualified volunteers from multiple sectors.

The business plan competition takes place from October 2009 through June 2010 and includes three rounds of evaluation. There is no fee to enter.

Visit the competition Web site for complete program information.

Ashoka’s Changemakers Announces New Collaborative Competition on Nutrition

The Global Alliance for Improved Nutrition and Ashoka’s Changemakers have announced “Improved Nutrition: Solutions through Innovation,” a new online competition to identify innovative solutions for communities currently lacking access to adequate nutrition or unaware of its benefits.

The competition is open to all types of individuals and organizations (charitable organizations, private companies, or public entities) from all countries. The program will consider all entries that demonstrate system-changing solutions that expand and improve nutrition to undernourished populations, and that indicate growth beyond the stage of idea, concept, or research. At a minimum, entries should be at the demonstration stage and indicate success. Entries must be submitted in English, Spanish, French, or Portuguese.

Online competition submissions will be accepted until November 25, 2009. At any time before the deadline, competition participants are encouraged to revise their entries based on questions and insights that they receive in the Changemakers discussion. Participation in the discussion enhances an entrant’s prospects in the competition and provides the community and the judges an opportunity to understand the entrant’s project more completely.

A panel of judges will select the competition finalists, and the Changemakers community will then vote online to select the three award-winners from the field of finalists. The three finalists will each receive a cash prize of $5,000. Five entrants will also be chosen by GAIN to attend, all-expenses paid, the GAIN Business Alliance Global Forum in May 2010, where they will have the opportunity to present their solutions to investors.

2010 Grant Competition: Latin America & Caribbean Development Marketplace

Call for proposals July 31st to September 30th. Focus on “Youth Developing Opportunity: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Sustainability”.

Development Marketplace (DM) is a competitive grant program administered by the World Bank and supported by various partners that identifies and funds innovative, early-stage projects with high potential for development impact. Since its inception in 1998, DM has awarded roughly US$40 million to more than 1,000 projects through global, regional and country-level Marketplaces. Using DM funding as a launching pad, many projects go on to scale up or replicate elsewhere, winning prestigious awards for social entrepreneurship.

This year the 2010 Latin America & Caribbean Development Marketplace is focused on Youth Developing Opportunity: Entrepreneurship, Innovation, Sustainability.

July 31st to September 30th: Call for Proposals

The call for proposals provided on this website is open to participants from the Latin America and the Caribbean Region. The open, transparent and competitive selection process aims to attract ideas from a range of innovators: civil society groups, private firms, foundations, academia, and government.

There are an estimated 1.5 billion youth worldwide – 50% of them live in developing countries and 60% of them living below the poverty line. An estimated 140 million young people live in the Latin America and Caribbean region. Young people can be a source of growth and development, yet a subset of young people – often referred to as “youth at risk” – are prone to becoming victims or perpetrators of conflict, violence, poverty, and/or exclusion, which in turn threatens the economic, social and political wellbeing of their countries.

Youth entrepreneurship, the theme of this year’s LAC DM, exists in many forms, ranging from productive enterprises, operating in the private sector and focused on profit generation to social entrepreneurs, associated with the activities of Non-Governmental Organizations and Civil Society Organizations (NGO/CSOs). Both have a key role to play in the economic and social development of Latin America and the Caribbean.

This competition recognizes innovation across this spectrum, and will reward projects that focus on reducing poverty, enriching lives and generating productive, healthy citizens. A central focus of this competition will therefore be on ideas that have the potential to create employment for young people and bring associated benefits to communities and society at large.

The LAC DM sponsors have identified three themes for this year’s competition. We seek ideas that are youth-led and/or youth-focused in the following areas:

  • The commercialization of locally produced biodiversity and agricultural products without degrading source habitats.
  • Innovative approaches to income generating opportunities for young people living in poor urban areas that are “hot spots” of crime and violence
  • Social and economic initiatives that contribute to the well-being of vulnerable groups

The LAC Development Marketplace 2010 is using a two-step process. Step 1 is to register your organization. The Submission form will then be automatically sent to registered participants who will be required to submit their proposals electronically (by email).

  • STEP 2- SUBMISSION FORM
The Submission Form will be sent to organizations who register under STEP 1. Registered participants can fill out the submission form using the guidelines and the step-by-step guide:

A World of Solutions: IADB Innovation Lab Competition

Financing of up to US$ 20,000 will be provided for an innovation to improve the quality of life and the economic and social inclusion of People with Disabilities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Deadline: October 15, 2009.

In the Science and Technology Division of the Inter-American Development Bank we are looking to support the implementation of pilot projects that use innovation to improve the quality of life and the economic and social inclusion of People with Disabilities in Latin America and the Caribbean.

The initiative is made up of two competitions:

We wanted to know more about what problems people with disabilities (PWD) face in the region.

Our blogis an interactive tool where PWD, Disabled People’s Organizations, and anyone interested in the topic shared, voted, and prioritized the most important barriers to social and economic inclusion. The voting process was active open until July 10, 2009, and the most voted problems were:

Problem: Vote
Software for employment of people with visual disabilities 61,160
Toys for All 43,480
Access to Transport 42181
Education support for Deaf children 2587
How can people with physical disabilities work from home? 1068

And now, we are opening the Competition of Solutions!

The competition is open until October 15, 2009, and we are looking for solutions to these most voted problems. Scientists, innovators and creative people from all areas are invited to participate and the IDB will finance the piloting of the five most appropriate and innovative ideas. Financing of up to US$ 20,000 will be provided.

On the interactive webpage you can learn more about the dialogue and discussing related to the problems.

Anna Lalor Burdick Program Offers Support for Human Reproduction Education

An initiative of the Lalor Foundation, the Anna Lalor Burdick Program seeks to educate young women about human reproduction in order to broaden and enhance their options in life.

The program focuses particularly on young women who have inadequate access to information regarding reproductive health, including the subjects of contraception and pregnancy termination, and as such may be particularly lacking options in their lives.

The funding program emphasizes support for projects that demonstrate realistic plans to achieve greater financial self-sufficiency; support for new or smaller organizations, including grassroots efforts; support for collaborative efforts among nonprofit organizations; and support for new ideas, initiatives, and demonstration projects that may be successfully replicated or provide multiple benefits. The program has no geographic limits.

The program annually awards a small number of grants in the range of $10,000 to $50,000 each. Grants are generally awarded for one year only.

Eligible U.S. applicants must be tax-exempt under section 501(c)(3) of the U.S. Internal Revenue Service Code and defined as “not a private foundation” under section 509(a) of the Code. Applicants not located in the U.S. and not already classified by the U.S. Internal Revenue Service should contact the foundation office for further information.

Concept papers are accepted twice a year. For the November 1 deadline, concept papers may be submitted between September 1 and November 1. For the May 15 deadline, concept papers may be submitted between March 15 and May 15.

Complete program guidelines are available at the Lalor Foundation Web site.
