Entries Invited for 2011 Nonprofit Collaboration Prize

The Collaboration Prize is a national award presented to nonprofit organizations that collaborate effectively to gain greater impact. The prize was created and is funded by the Lodestar Foundation in collaboration with the Arizona-Indiana-Michigan Alliance and leaders in the nonprofit sector.

The prize is designed to identify and showcase models of collaboration among nonprofit organizations. Recognizing the impact that can be achieved from working together, the prize identifies and showcases collaborations among two or more nonprofit organizations that cooperate to demonstrate innovative and effective responses to challenges or opportunities.

In 2011, the Collaboration Prize will award a total of $250,000 to the collaborations that best exemplify the impact that can result from working together. Each of the eight finalists will receive $12,500 and the winner will receive an additional $150,000.

Applications may be submitted by any individual familiar with the collaboration, including an employee of any entity involved in the collaboration.

SEVEN Fund Announces Third Annual Open Enterprise Solutions to Poverty Request for Proposals

The SEVEN Fund is a virtual nonprofit entity run by entrepreneurs whose strategy is to markedly increase the rate of innovation and diffusion of enterprise-based solutions to poverty. SEVEN believes that such solutions already exist but are not sufficiently studied, analyzed, and exhibited as examples.

The SEVEN Fund has published its annual open “Enterprise-based Solutions to Poverty” Request for Proposals. The competition will award up to two research grants of up to $100,000 each to support innovative original research in enterprise solutions to poverty.

The RFP has four goals: 1) to expand scientific inquiry to include disciplines fundamental to a deep understanding of entrepreneurship and economic development currently unsupported by conventional grant sources; 2) to forge and maintain useful collaborations between researchers and on-the-ground actors of enterprise-based solutions to poverty; 3) to provide the public with a deeper understanding of this area and its potential implications; and 4) to find, research, and analyze role-model entrepreneurs and companies whose lesson may inspire others.

Anyone may submit an initial proposal in order to compete for a SEVEN grant as long as the proposal reflects the scope and guidelines stated in the RFP. Applicants are expected to be think-tanks, economists, professors from business schools as well as other departments, researchers, entrepreneurs, business experts, strategy experts, graduate and post-graduate student researchers, economic development experts, business strategists, non-governmental organizations, etc.

Key Findings From the 2009 Middleberg / SNCR Survey of Media in the Wired World

Summary

The Second Annual Middleberg/SNCR Survey of Media in the Wired World examines: 1) how journalists are adopting these new social media and citizen journalism tools and technologies, and 2) their attitudes about how social media and citizen journalism are affecting their profession. The study found growth in the use of these tools across all their data sets, in contrast to the 2008 study in which uptake was higher among younger versus older journalists.

* “Nearly 70 percent of journalists are using social networking sites, a 28% increase since the 2008 study
* 48 percent are using Twitter or other microblogging sites and tools, a 25% increase since 2008
* 66 percent are using blogs
* 48 percent are using online video
* 25 percent are using podcasts
* More than 90 percent of journalists agree that new media and communications tools and technologies are enhancing journalism to some extent”

“…91 percent of respondents agreed that new media and communications tools and technologies are enhancing journalism. Journalists that participated in the study reported that they are increasingly using social media to disseminate news, find story ideas and sources, monitor sentiments and discussions, research individuals and organizations, keep up on issues and topics of interest and participate in conversations. Additionally, journalists’ perception of the credibility of most social media channels is increasing. Nearly 80 percent of respondents agreed that new media and communications technologies allow them to report with greater accuracy, and 80 percent of journalists believe that bloggers have become important opinion shapers in the 21st century and many are increasingly incorporating citizen-generated media into their reporting.”

M·A·C AIDS Fund Accepting Grant Applications for Housing Services and Programs

The M·A·C AIDS Fund U.S. Community Grants Program supports organizations working to address the link between poverty and AIDS through grants for programs that are providing food and nutrition and housing services to people living with HIV and AIDS.

There are two application deadlines per year for the U.S. Community Grants program — one for food/nutrition applications and one for housing applications. (The 2010 deadline has passed.) Organizations may only apply for one of the two programs each year.

Priority will be given to direct-service programs. For the housing program, priority will be given to established AIDS housing services providers and programs providing direct housing services to clients.

Applicant organizations must have 501(c)(3) status.

The maximum grant amount that may be requested is $50,000.

“Faith and Development”

The S.E.VEN Fund (SEVEN) is pleased to announce its 2010-11 Essay Competition in partnership with the Washington DC-based Center For Interfaith Action on Global Poverty (CIFA). We are seeking essays on enterprise solutions to poverty from around the globe that are faith-based, faith-inspired, or interfaith efforts. The competition will award two (2) prizes of US $5,000. The submission deadline is October 15, 2010 at midnight Eastern Standard Time (EST). Winners will be announced on December 15, 2010. This essay competition is open to all participants globally.

Writers are asked to submit a first-person narrative describing enterprise solutions to poverty that are faith-based, faith-inspired, or interfaith efforts. Illustrations may come from any domain, including healthcare, education, consumer products, human rights, and others; examples must represent innovative private solutions to public problems.
