2011 Legatum Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship, which recently opened for entries and offers a Grand Prize of $100,000 and five further prizes of $50,000 each.

Recent research from the Legatum Institute* confirms that entrepreneurs – and the businesses they lead – are the enablers of growth and innovation in every economy. The Africa Awards, now in its fourth year, is designed to recognise and reward these role models: by championing their expertise and experience, we celebrate high standards of business excellence, encourage aspiring small business owners, and stimulate the flow of investment capital within the continent.

Enabling and celebrating entrepreneurship is therefore critical to the local and national economy, as well as to business owners. Nominate your business!!!!

The Africa Awards are open for entries until August 24th 2011 and the winners will be announced at a televised Gala Awards Banquet on December 8th 2011 in Nairobi, which marks the culmination of  a high level one-day conference on entrepreneurship.

Submit a business plan that will improve the environment in which young children grow up and you could…
* Receive feedback on your plan and get access to useful business tools.
* Get support from a coach to write your business plan. Win a business trip for trainings, b2b, and investor meetings.
* Get access to over 100 investors interested in financing SMEs in developing countries.
* Get access to a network of more than 36,000 like-minded entrepreneurs, coaches, and investors.

Participation criteria:

1. Check the general participation criteria.
2. Your business should have a positive impact on young children by improving the physical environment in which they grow up. For example: cleaner energy, water and sanitation solutions, better housing, safer transport, safe places to play, etc.
3. Your country of business should be: Brazil, Peru, Tanzania, Uganda, India, or Turkey.

Submission Instructions

How to submit your business plan?

1. Become a member of the BiD Network. Register at the link below.
2. Create a profile in the BiD Network.
3. Fill in and submit an online application and answer the 15 questions about your business idea.

Submit your application for coaching services before:

Peru and Brazil: the 15th of March 2011
India, Tanzania, Turkey and Uganda: the 31st of March 2011

Please pay special attention to the timeline of the competition.

4. Submit a complete business plan. If you already have a complete business plan you can attach it to your application directly. You can also submit it once your application is accepted.

Make sure to submit your complete business plan before the competition deadlines:

Peru and Brazil: the 30th of April 2011
India, Tanzania, Turkey and Uganda: 31st of May 2011

What happens after you submit your plan?

1. Your plan will enter the assessment process. You will receive extensive feedback in each stage.
2. In the beginning of May they will select the finalists from Latin America. In June they will select the finalists from Africa, Turkey and India. The entrepreneurs will be invited for a business trip for trainings, b2b, and investor meetings in their respective regions.
3. Whether or not you become a finalist, all high quality business plans are eligible for the BiD Network Investor Matchmaking Services.

They are recruiting for the Agricultural Value Chains Team  (Ghana, Zambia) for departures starting in March 2011. In this project aimed at removing rural farmers’ barriers to agricultural input access, EWB will be partnering with donors. By becoming a part of the donor chain, The Agricultural Value Chains Team will be able to share field realities and will have the respect and understanding needed to drive change for farmers.

They are searching for African Business Development Team members for departures beginning in March 2001. Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) that have long been neglected by development initiatives are finally getting recognition from Social Investment Funds (SIFs) that have emerged to provide capital investment to these businesses. EWB’s African Business Development Team will continue to provide technical assistance to rural African businesses, as EWB has for years, while partnering with SIFs to provide services at scale.

They are seeking a leader for Malawi’s leading sanitation initiative, Community-Led Total Sanitation (CLTS) to start in March 2011.  CLTS is an innovative approach, holding open community discussions to confront taboo sanitation behaviors. The change is owned and led by the community itself, with the CLTS team acting as facilitators and encouraging follow-through on community-set goals.

We are recruiting a District Capacity Development and Decentralization Policy Analyst to join the Malawi Water and Sanitation team as early as March 2011. Since 1998, Malawi has been undergoing a process of decentralization. This process, meant to increase the districts’ power to provide sustainable and effective services to their constituents, particularly in the water and sanitation sector, has been slow and requires acceleration to improve service delivery. This role is aimed at using understanding of field realities to increase capacity development at the district level and to advise decentralization partners (namely the Malawi-Germany Program for Democratic Decentralization) on policy.

The Arab Gulf Programme for Development (AGFUND) has opened the door for nominations for the AGFUND International Prize for Pioneering Human Development Projects. It invites the United Nations, international, and regional organizations as well as NGOs, ministries, public institutions, universities, and research centres worldwide to submit their nominations for the Prize amounting to $500 000 in its four Categories. The theme of the prize for the year 2011 is ‘Empowering Youth through Entrepreneurship and Job Opportunities.’ subdivided to match the four categories of the Prize are as follows:
•  First Category:
The role of international organizations in supporting the developing countries’ national policies and programs for empowering youth through entrepreneurships and job opportunities. (For projects implemented by UN, international or regional organizations)

• Second Category:
NGOs-led efforts to empowering youth through entrepreneurships and job opportunities. (For projects implemented by national NGOs).

• Third Category:
The governmental bodies’ efforts in adoption of pioneering entrepreneurships for empowering youth and increasing their job opportunities. ((For projects by government ministries and public institutions).

• Fourth Category:
Individual-led efforts to empowering youth through entrepreneurships and job opportunities. (For projects initiated, sponsored and/or implemented by individuals).

The projects submitted for the Prize are evaluated with high objectivity and transparency by juries chosen every year with regard to the experience and specialization relevant to the Prize theme. The number of projects which have won the Prize since its inception in 1999 amounts to 38 projects, implemented by UN and international organizations as well as NGOs and individuals. More than one hundred developing countries in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and Eastern Europe have benefited from the prize.

The Prize Committee is composed a number of distinguished world personalities representing the world’s geographical regions. The Committee convenes annually to discuss the evaluation results of the nominated projects and to choose the winning projects. Prizes are presented in a ceremony to which representatives of the winning organizations, specialists and experts in the field of development, celebrities interested in development issues, and media representatives are invited.

Rolling Deadline

Through its main grantmaking programme “Rural Women Creating Change”, New Field Foundation supports African rural women, their organisations, and networks in sub-Saharan Africa to increase their agency over resources, information, and policy. Rural Women Creating Change grants are intended to enable:

Local Organising: to bring significant improvement to rural women’s organisations, their families, communities, and countries; Movement Building: to contribute to a dynamic movement of rural women who are creating social change; and Systemic Change: to promote African rural women’s leadership that creates economic justice, gender equity, and peace at local, provincial, and national levels.

New Field chooses to concentrate its support in regions that are going through transformation after years of conflict or other upheaval. The programme concentrates on three focus areas: 1) Casamance, Senegal: Kolda district; Kerewane, Gambia; 2) Mano River Union: Kissidougou, Guéckédou, and N’zerekore districts of Guinea; Kailahun and Kono districts of Sierra Leone; Lofa county of Liberia; and 3) Niger River Basin: border area between Burkina Faso, Côte d’Ivoire, and Mali.

The majority of these grants go to support local groups that are organising collectively to create “thriving, equitable, and peaceful communities for rural African women and their families.”  New Field Foundation is particularly interested in organisations that:

Are African-based, women-led, and community-centred; Increase the resources and agency of rural women’s organisations and networks; Can receive and manage international funds; Are well established in the communities in which they work; Demonstrate well functioning management, finance, and programmatic systems; and  Are benefiting rural women and their organisations through systemic change.

The Center on Philanthropy and Civil Society’s Senior International Fellows Program provides an opportunity for the professional development of third-sector practitioners from outside the United States who are decision-makers in their professions. The program is also designed to help build third-sector capacity in the fellows’ home countries.

The research topic for fellowships for the 2010 program will be community foundations. Proposals on other topics related to the philanthropic sector will be considered from candidates applying on a tuition- or institutionally sponsored basis.

Fellows are based at the Graduate Center of the City University of New York, where they will participate in a one-month seminar (October 18 to November 12, 2010) focused on the U.S. and international voluntary sectors. Based on the seminars, readings, discussions with leaders in the field, and the fellows’ own experiences, each participant will produce a position paper with recommendations for the development, adaptation, or expansion of foundations or another approved topic. It is expected that these recommendations will draw from a variety of foundation experiences and will reflect the political, social, economic, and legal frameworks in the fellows’ home countries.

The program is open to senior-level practitioners (generally over the age of 35). Each fellowship covers the cost of tuition. As part of the award, the center also provides furnished accommodations in Manhattan, round-trip air travel to and from New York City, and a stipend to help cover research-related and additional living expenses.
